Peyton White's 54-hole total of 199 (-17) broke the Ohio Mid-Amateur Championship scoring record.

White, a former Korn Ferry Tour member and Ohio University standout, made 18 birdies and an eagle on his way to an eight stroke victory at Shawnee Country Club.

The runner-up was Dublin's Jeg Coughlin III (-9), who had an impressive effort in the defense of his title.

Coming into the final round, White’s lead was three over Coughlin III. Robert Pickett of Toledo rounded out the final threesome. 

After 36 holes of flawless golf, White’s lead evaporated on the opening hole. A 3-putt from short range causing a double bogey, partnered with Coughlin’s birdie, meant it was a tie ballgame after just one hole.

“I was like, oh boy, here we go… I tried to refrain from making it a match play situation (with Jeg), I thought if I got back to even-par after the front-nine I might be okay,” White told the OGA about his early struggles. 

White did as he hoped, playing the rest of the front-nine in -2 to get back to even for the day. 

With Coughlin and Pickett also struggling, White had suddenly opened up a six shot lead at the turn.

From there, White started to show off, as he made five birdies on the final nine holes and never came close to making a bogey.

Ultimately, White’s final round 5-under-par 67 gave him an eight shot victory over Coughlin III.

White, who recently finished as medalist in U.S. Mid-Amateur Qualifying at Rattlesnake Ridge, is certainly finding his form before one of the biggest championships he’s played in his career.

“I played really well at (Rattlesnake), the club championship (the weekend before the Ohio Mid-Amateur Championship, and now here. I felt really comfortable with the lead today too. When the driver works, I feel like everything else falls into place,” he said.
