RESULTSPHOTO GALLERYJames Volpenhein of Cincinnati has now won back-to-back Ohio Senior Amateur Championships.
On Wednesday, Volpenhein carded a six-under 66 at the Country Club of the North near Beavercreek. The 66 is the lowest round in an Ohio Senior Amateur Championship since TJ Brudzinski’s 64 in 2022.
NOTE: This was the only round of the championship due to unplayable conditions and heavy rainfall that cancelled play on Tuesday.
To his own surprise and appreciation, Volpenhein is just the third player to win back-to-back Ohio Senior Amateur Championships.
“That’s cool. I’m one of the older guys in the senior division… These are getting harder and I don’t have many left to win, so it’s even more meaningful because time is running out,” Volpenhein expressed after learning of his feat.
Volpenhein’s 66 was largely due to a heater in the middle of his round, which included six birdies and an eagle.
However, down the stretch, Volpenhein’s ball-striking became shaky.
“Someone told me I needed to par the last two holes... It made me apprehensive,” Volpenhein said about what he felt down the stretch.
Fortunately for Volpenhein, he’d go on to make significant par putts on each of his final three holes to top Dublin’s Dave Antill by two strokes.
David Clancy (Springboro) and Peter Betzold (West Chester) finished T-3 at -3.
In the Super Senior division, first place went to Columbus’ Tim Hickman, who shot 71.
Terry Tyson (Perrysburg) and Dan DeVore (Cincinnati) finished in a tie for runner-up at even-par 72. Devore led for much of the round before bogeying three of his final five holes, including the final two.
Defending Super Senior division champion Ed Steiber finished in a tie for 6th.
