Dublin's Jeg Coughlin III finally hoisted the Ohio Mid-Amateur Championship trophy after multiple years of close calls.
On Wednesday, Coughlin III began the final round tied with Brookside Golf & Country Club's own Scott Anderson, a two-time winner of the event himself. Defending champion Domenic Maricocchi, who was two shots behind, joined them in the final group.
With birdies on No. 2 and No. 4, Coughlin had opened up a three stroke lead on Anderson. However, the tides quickly turned. Jeg made three consecutive bogeys on holes 5-7 and Anderson birdied the long par-3 8th to take the lead by one.
Coughlin's birdie on No. 10 evened things up at -6, before a big turn on the par-4 13th. Anderson hit his tee shot in the penalty area but was able to scramble his way to a bogey. Coughlin drained a 25-foot birdie putt to suddenly grab a two shot lead at -7.
Coughlin gave two shots back to the field with sloppy bogeys on 14 and 15. Anderson also three-putt bogeyed the 15th hole to drop back to -4.
Maricocchi announced his presence during this stretch as well. The defending champion, who was four shots down standing on the 14th tee, went birdie-par and found himself at -4 just one shot behind Coughlin.
Maricocchi would make an untimely 3-putt bogey on the par-4 17th to end his chances of a title defense. Anderson, however, made a clutch birdie on the same hole to grab a share of the lead with Coughlin heading into the last.
Just a few days before, Anderson had fallen on the 18th hole in the Brookside Golf & Country Club Men's Championship to Jake Gilkison.
Both Coughlin and Anderson found the fairway on the long par-4 18th. However, Coughlin gained an advantage on Anderson by hitting his approach to roughly 25 feet, moments after Anderson had hit to 50 feet.
Anderson lagged his birdie putt to roughly five feet, giving an opportunity for Coughlin to end it with his birdie putt. Jeg's putt looked good for an eternity but just slid by on the right side. Coughlin tapped in for an easy par. Anderson's short putt to send it to a playoff lipped out on the high-side, giving Coughlin the win at the 2025 Ohio Mid-Amateur Championship by a single stroke.
After the win, Coughlin was quick to point out his now 3-2-1finishes over the least three years at the Ohio Mid-Amateur Championship. 3-2-1 is of course fitting for Coughlin, who has a family history rooted in racing.
The final Ohio Golf Association event of 2025, the Two-Man Best-Ball Championship, takes place at Worthington Hills Country Club, from Sept. 15-16.
