On this day in Ohio golf history, the 32nd PGA Championship began at Scioto Country Club.

The tournament consisted of 12 rounds, including 36 holes of stroke play qualifying followed by six rounds of 36-hole match play.

Chandler Harper surprised the golf world when he won the PGA Championship after arriving with just one professional win under his belt. Defending champion Sam Snead was expected to win but lost a second-round match to Eddie Burke.

Chandler Harper went on to win four more PGA Tour titles before settling back home in Portsmouth, Virginia in 1955. He opened and operated Bide-A-Wee Golf Course in his hometown until his retirement in 1992.
